Allen Lane has acquired the rights to a new title on the "battles of the birth space" from midwife Leah Hazard.
Josephine Greywoode, publishing director at Penguin Press, has acquired UK and Commonwealth English language rights to Birth Wars from Hayley Steed at Janklow & Nesbit for Allen Lane. US rights have been sold to Diversion Books.
Hazard’s book “exposes the hidden battles of the birth space” by exploring how political, social and economic forces influence the birthing experience.
Hazard is a midwife, author and the host of the podcast "What the Midwife Said". She has worked in a variety of clinical areas within the NHS maternity services, including antenatal clinics, triage units and labour wards. Her previous books include the Sunday Times bestseller Hard Pushed (Cornerstone) and Scottish Book of the Year, Womb (Virago).
Hazard said: “The discourse around birth has never been more topical or more polarised. I’m delighted to have this opportunity to bring my extensive experience and nuanced analysis to this vital topic, and thrilled to have the support of Josephine and the Penguin Press team.”
Greywoode said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be working with Leah on her ambitious book, which brings the most personal of human experiences into the pressing global and socio-political conversations of our time. Leah’s experience, intellectual rigour and stylistic flair illuminate our collective choices and priorities in startling new ways.”
