Laura Ellen Anderson’s Amelia Fang series has been picked up by an animation company.
The deal for dramatisation rights was brokered between Philippa Tsang, German production-finance-distribution company DCM’s head of production and development UK, and Emily Hayward Whitlock at The Artist Partnership, on behalf of Helen Boyle at Pickled Ink.
The vampire series, published by HarperCollins, will be brought to life as a 2D adventure comedy series for six to nine year-olds by children’s entertainment specialist CAKE, DCM Pictures and Boulder Media.
It will be split into 48 11-minute episodes and two 22-minute specials. They will be produced by DCM Pictures with animation led by Boulder Media in Dublin and directed by Robert Cullen. The writing team is led by Elly Brewer.
Amelia Fang is described as “a gorgeously gothic, fantastically funny series following the adventures of a plucky little vampire with a big heart and her brilliantly diverse gang of friends”.
Anderson said: “I am over the moon that Amelia Fang is being developed for screen with such a brilliant team. It has been incredible to see my artwork and stories come to life through animation, and I’m excited about what the future could hold for Amelia Fang and the gang.”
The first book in the series, Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball launched as a Waterstones Children’s Book of the Month. Anderson has gone on to be the official illustrator of the Summer Reading Challenge, a World Book Day £1 author with Amelia Fang and the Bookworm Gang, and has achieved notable awards success including landing Silver in the Made for Mums Award, being longlisted for the Alligator’s Mouth Award for Illustrated Early Fiction and shortlisted for the Sainsbury’s Children’s Book Award 2021 for the first book in the Rainbow Grey series.
Ed Galton, c.e.o. at CAKE and exec producer on Amelia Fang said: “Amelia Fang is full of heart, warmth and big adventure and we are thrilled to be working with DCM Pictures and Boulder Media in bringing her to the screen.”
Philippa Tsang, Marc Schmidheiny and Christoph Daniels at DCM Pictures and exec producers on Amelia Fang added: “Amelia Fang is joyful, funny and at its heart, it is a show about embracing difference in our society. We’re so lucky to be working with Elly Brewer, Boulder Media and CAKE which have been drawn to the rich world and great characters that Laura Ellen Anderson has created.”
