Arcadia has acquired four books from Hugo Award-winning author, and co-author of This Is How You Lose the Time War, Amal El-Mohtar. Arcadia publishing director Anne Perry acquired UK and Commonwealth rights. The deal was negotiated by Chris Scheina on behalf of Tor Books.
The four books include two novels, one collection of short stories and one novella, The River Has Roots, which will be publishing in March 2025.
The synopsis reads: "The River Has Roots is a fierce retelling of a 17th-century murder ballad. In the small town of Thistleford, on the edge of Faerie, dwells the mysterious Hawthorn family. There, they tend and harvest the enchanted willows and honour an ancient compact to sing to them in thanks for their magic. None more devotedly than the family’s latest daughters, Esther and Ysabel, who cherish each other as much as they cherish the ancient trees. But when Esther rejects a forceful suitor in favour of a lover from the land of Faerie, not only the sisters’ bond but also their lives will be at risk."
Perry said: “Amal is a creative powerhouse, and her writing is lush and ferocious and utterly compelling. Her short fiction has demonstrated her unfettered imagination as well as her beautiful turn of phrase, and Time War, which she wrote with Max Gladstone, has become an undisputed classic of the genre. We’re so proud to be the UK home of her incredible solo projects!”
El-Mohtar said: “I’m so thrilled to be working with Anne and the wonderful team at (aptly named) Arcadia! They’ve been such phenomenal champions for Time War and I’m delighted to look forward to several more projects together. It’s such a gift to partner with people who love books with the same feral excitement I do, and I truly can’t wait to get started.”
The River Has Roots will publish in March 2025, with subsequent projects to follow.
