Octopus imprint Aster has bagged two new books by Catherine Gray, author of bestseller The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober, with the first designed to help people find joy in the everyday.
Publishing director Stephanie Jackson acquired world English-language rights from Rachel Mills at Rachel Mills Literary.
The Unexpected Joy of the Ordinary, described as “hilarious, insightful and soulful”, will be published on 26th December. It aims to help readers find happiness in the everyday acts often overlooked in favour of phenomenal experiences, arguing that brushes with the extraordinary lead to a “hedonic treadmill” where, after a surge of joy, our happiness level returns to a “normal” level.
Jackson said she was “delighted”, describing Gray as “a real superstar”, who in the book “exposes some surprising realities about the extraordinaries among us: that influencers risk higher rates of anxiety and depression, high-rollers are less happy, and huge, frothy weddings increase the likelihood of divorce.”
The second title in the deal is expected in 2020.
