Aster, part of the Octopus Publishing Group, has acquired Rest is Resistance: Free Yourself from Grind Culture and Reclaim Your Life by Tricia Hersey, founder of The Nap Ministry.
Natalie Bradley acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Laura Mamelok at Little, Brown Group US for publication in October 2022.
The publisher describes Rest is Resistance as “a call to action for anyone suffering from the toxic effects of grind culture”.
Its synopsis reads: “[Rest is Resistance] centres around the systemic issues that cause us to overwork, and ultimately burn out, and offers us liberation through rest. In its simplest form, rest becomes an act of resistance and a reclaiming of power because it disrupts and pushes back against capitalism and white supremacy.
“Slowing down moves us away from trying to operate at machine levels of productivity and reasserts our humanity.
“In this fierce and tender manifesto, Tricia Hersey, aka The Nap Bishop, casts an illuminating light on our troubled relationship with rest and offers guidance to creating a rest practice for long-term health, both for the individual and society as a whole.
“With captivating storytelling and practical advice, all delivered in Tricia’s lyrical voice and informed by her deep experience in activism, theology and performance art, Rest is Resistance is the urgent wake-up call you need to nap, rest and, most importantly, dream once more.”
Hersey is an artist, poet, theologian and community organiser, as well as the founder of The Nap Ministry, an organisation that examines rest as a form of resistance by curating sacred spaces for the community to rest via Collective Napping Experiences, immersive workshops, performance art installations, and social media.
Bradley said of the acquisition: “Looking at what Tricia has already achieved with The Nap Ministry, it is clear how widely her message resonates. With her beautiful debut, Tricia will not only encourage us to slow down, but will grant us the space to imagine and create. I’m so excited for us to launch this inspiring new voice on the Aster list."
Hersey commented: “One of my hopes for the book is for it to be a light on our pilgrimage to disrupting white supremacy and capitalism. A field guide for the rest movement."
