Audible has snapped up Karla Marie Sweet’s debut novel, Another Life, as an Audible Original.
Robin Morgan-Bentley, director of scripted drama and original books, acquired global English-language rights from Ben Dunn at DunnFogg.
Narrated by actor Kingsley Ben-Adir and Erin Doherty, Another Life is set in a world where the technology exists for machines to carry and bear children. The story follows husband and wife, James and Lucy. While the latter wants to explore her career as an actor and James wants to settle down and have a family, the External Womb Programme appears to provide the answers.
The synopsis states: "As she and her husband James embark on their journey, it becomes clear she’s not being entirely honest with him and, as her old flame returns, everything is thrown into jeopardy. Decades later, the use of external wombs is commonplace. But a corrupt government stepping into power leads to this groundbreaking piece of technology falling into the wrong hands, forcing everyone to reckon with a challenging new world and their place within it."
Sweet said: "Writing my debut novel has been a way for me to grapple with so many concepts, themes and issues. A means of articulating so many fears and dreams. Developing the coming-of-age stories of these characters over the past few years has also been a big part of my own coming of age."
The audiobook will be exclusively released on Audible on 19th September 2024.
