Audible is releasing The Shouts Beneath, the debut audiobook from Paige Cowan-Hall, winner of the Women’s Prize Trust Discoveries Prize 2023.
Imogen Papworth, content acquisition and partnerships manager at Audible, acquired rights from Ciara Finan at Curtis Brown. The Shouts Beneath will be available exclusively on Audible from 30th May and will be narrated by Jade Anouka.
The novel follows Emily, who has spent her whole life running away. She never speaks about what happened between her and her mother at her family home when she was a child, and one night her father packs up the car and drove them away, instructing her to never return.
“However, when her mother dies on her 28th birthday everything changes. She starts seeing her mother everywhere she goes, including in her dreams. Her husband Matt convinces her that the only way she can make peace with her past is to make one final visit to her childhood home”, Audible said. “With Matt and her friends by her side, she feels ready to take the leap back in time. Opening this Pandora’s box will change Emily’s life forever. Is she ready to face the truth?”
The Women’s Prize Trust Discoveries writing programme is run in partnership with Audible, Curtis Brown and the Curtis Brown Creative Writing School. This is the second Women’s Prize Discoveries commission from Audible following the release of previous winner, Sui Annukka’s debut Audible Original novella, The Mother Son.
Cowan-Hall said: “I loved writing The Shouts Beneath and crafting a story with the listener in mind was such a new experience. I can’t wait to hear how Jade Anouka and Audible will bring the story to life.”
Aurelie de Troyer, head of regional content, Europe, at Audible said: “We’re delighted to partner with the Women’s Prize Trust on the Discoveries programme and to support their incredibly deserving winners. Bringing celebrated actors together with talented debut writers like Paige is something we’re proud of.”
