Aurum has scooped a second parenting travel memoir by Kate Wickers after her previous success with Shape of a Boy.
Katie Bond, publisher, acquired world English rights to Mum Maman Moeder—A Tale of Motherhood in Twelve Cities from Darryl Samaraweera at Artellus. It will publish on Mother’s Day in March 2023.
The synopsis says: “Travel writer Kate Wickers grabbed opportunities to work on family holidays but had to come up with cunning plans to keep her kids on side. Her observations of how mothers in other cultures parented were often tried out on her unsuspecting sons. Mum Maman Moeder portrays parenting in Paris, Singapore, London, Kuala Lumpur, Amsterdam, Mumbai, New York, Marrakesh, Budapest, Rome, Dubai and Saigon. It is a book that gets to the heart of motherhood and how, wherever in the world you are, there’s no such thing as perfect. Most of us are simply muddling along.”
Bond said: “Kate Wickers captures the essence of being a parent in the thick of it and learning on the hoof. She is also very, very funny. Mothers worry constantly about their parenting skills and Mum Maman Moeder is a highly relatable account of family life that celebrates muddling along as best we can. Following in the bestselling footsteps of French Children Don’t Throw Food (Black Swan) and The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother (Bloomsbury), it’s the perfect Mother’s Day present.”
Wickers added: “The warm response from booksellers to Shape of a Boy has been wonderful. From seeing it in the window of my local Waterstones to lovely tweets from independent bookshops, I’ve been thrilled with the response. My second book is another joyous project of reflecting on family travel and the highs and lows of being a mum.”
