Barrington Stoke has swooped for The Boy in the Tree, a middle-grade novella from Lisa Thompson.
Publisher Ailsa Bathgate acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Stephanie Thwaites at Curtis Brown for publication in April 2025.
The Boy in the Tree follows Noah who, worried about his parents’ arguments, channels his energy into a campaign to save a tree in his local park. The synopsis continues: "But while Noah does really want to save the tree, and marvels at the thousands of creatures that depend on it as their home, he also really wants to save his parents’ marriage. He hopes that his actions will somehow unite them again and stop them arguing, but has he gone too far this time?"
Bathgate said: "This story of a boy struggling with parental separation showcases [Thompson’s] ability to really get to the heart of the worries and struggles of ordinary children, while also providing comfort and, most importantly, hope. It never ceases to amaze me how much she manages to pack into one of our short novellas."
Thompson added: "I am very passionate about the wonderful books that Barrington Stoke publish and am always singing their praises when I visit schools. It’s such an honour to write another novella with them and I am very excited to see what my readers think of Noah’s adventure as The Boy in the Tree."
