Mitchell Beazley has acquired The Fashion Chronicles by fashion historian and BBC TV and radio presenter Amber Butchart.
Billed as "an exploration of 100 of the most fascinating style stories ever told", world rights in all languages in the book were acquired by commissioning editor Joe Cottington from Carrie Kania at C&W Agency.
The Fashion Chronicles tells the story of the best-dressed figures in history, from Eve's fig leaf to Beyoncé’s Black Panther homage, Cleopatra to Che Guevara, Joan of Arc to RuPaul.
Cottington called Butchart "a star in the making". An associate lecturer at London College of Fashion, she is the author of four previous books: Fashion Illustration in Britain, The Fashion of Film, Nautical Chic and Amber Jane Butchart's Fashion Miscellany. She has had her own BBC series, "A Stitch in Time", which aired recently on BBC4, exploring the stories behind the clothes worn by fascinating figures in history. She also presented "From Rags to Riches" for BBC Radio 4 and "Civilisations Stories" for BBC One.
Cottington commented further: "We’re delighted to be publishing her suitably stylish history of fashion’s greatest innovators. As she showed in her BBC series, Amber has the wonderful ability to take hours of painstaking academic research and condense them into fascinating stories that tell the history of style in a new, approachable way. The Fashion Chronicles is a fantastic book, that offers a new twist on the stories of some very well-known figures from history."
Butchart said: "I’m passionate about the importance of clothes as a means of communication, and so it’s been fantastic working with Octopus to showcase the importance of fashion and dress throughout history and across continents. I’ve been able to feature some of my favourite sartorial stories, from Pharaohs to pop stars."
The Fashion Chronicles publishes on 6th September as a £20 hardback.
