Bedford Square Publishers has scooped Nigar Alam’s Under the Tamarind Tree, a "story of love tested to its limits by moral dilemmas, and the beauty and fragility of childhood friendships".
Publisher and m.d. Jamie Hodder-Williams acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada from Rachel Yeoh at Madeline Milburn Literary. Alam came through the agency’s mentorship programme as part of its commitment to champion new voices around the world and launch debut writing careers.
Under The Tamarind Tree will be published in the US by Putnam and Bedford Square will publish in hardback in the UK on 9th November 2023.
The synopsis says: "Set across several generations in Pakistan, Alam’s home country, it follows Rozeena, Haaris, Aalya and Zohair through their early adult lives as they face the reality of class divide and the devastating effect this will have on all of them."
Alam commented: “Jamie’s enthusiasm for the novel is an absolute dream, and I can’t wait for this story to reach UK readers. None of this would have been possible without the passion and dedication of my agent, Rachel Yeoh, and the Madeleine Milburn Mentorship Programme."
Of the programme, the author added: "The mentorship was an amazing opportunity to receive one-on-one guidance as well as insight into the publishing industry.”
Hodder-Williams said: “Under the Tamarind Tree unwinds gracefully but with great intensity to reach an unforgettable climax. I can’t wait for others to discover Alam’s huge writing talent.”
