Black & White, an imprint of Bonnier, has pre-empted a crime-festival-set thriller from editor Eve Hall, under the pen-name E C Nevin.
Sam Humphreys, publishing director, acquired UK & Commonwealth (ex Canada) rights to A Novel Murder from Hannah Todd at Madeleine Milburn in a pre-empt for a three book deal. The book will be published in the US by Penguin Random House, and Canadian rights have gone to HarperCollins Canada.
This novel is the first of a cosy crime series that opens with author Jane Hepburn stumbling across the dead body of her literary agent in the book tent of crime-writing festival ‘Killer Lines’. As she teams up with a bestselling debut author and a disillusioned intern to solve the crime, she begins to realise that books – and those who love them – aren’t always as benign as you think.
Nevin said: “I’m delighted to be working with such a talented publisher in such an innovative, exciting publishing house. Sam is the perfect person to bring A Novel Murder into the world. I’m also indebted to my literary agent, Hannah Todd, who I definitely do not wish dead, and am also extremely grateful to Iris in Canada and both Caitlin and Isabel in the US. Putting my years of attending crime fiction festivals to good use in this book has been a total joy, and I can’t wait for readers to meet Jane, my unlikely series hero.”
Humphreys said: “I absolutely loved A Novel Murder, from first page to last – and Eve, as you’d expect, writes with pitch-perfect pace and humour, as well as both an unrivalled eye for detail and a finely honed ear for dialogue. A Novel Murder is a delight of a book, and I’m delighted to be publishing it next June – just before a certain well-known crime-writing festival.”
A Novel Murder will be published by Black & White in hardback, ebook, trade paperback and audio in June 2025.
