Black & White Publishing, an imprint of Bonnier Books UK, has signed Murray Hall, a novel by Milo Clenshaw and Vicky Allan based on the life of the eponymous historical figure.
World rights were acquired directly from the authors by Ali McBride, publishing director at Black & White, with publication scheduled for 25th April 2024.
Its synopsis reads: “It’s 1901 and the famous New York politico, womaniser and gambler Murray Hall has been pronounced dead. He lived a high-profile life in the public eye, but when the press breaks the news of his death, they reveal a side to his identity he never wanted known, a secret no one has guessed. And the truth will rock New York when they discover that Murray Hall has been buried as a woman.
“Following Murray Hall’s journey from the tenements of Glasgow to the realms of the New York elite, we find the definition of a self-made man. Yet the higher his status rose, the higher the chances of his true identity being discovered became. Inspired by an incredible true story, Murray Hall tells of an extraordinary rise to political success, achieved against all odds."
Clenshaw, a curator and writer based in Hawick in the Scottish Borders, said: "It’s been a humbling experience getting the chance to bring this small piece of trans history to light. I have loved collaborating with Vicky, and can’t wait to share Murray Hall with the world."
Allan is a journalist who writes chiefly about the environment for the Glasgow Herald. She is also the author of a book about the menopause, Still Hot! (Black & White Publishing), and a novel entitled Stray (Fourth Estate).
McBride said: “Milo and Vicky have created a tremendous historical novel about a fascinating life, thoroughly researched and carefully detailed. It’s a brilliant jigsaw puzzle which they so effectively piece together to tell the story of this compelling and important historical figure.”
