Bloomsbury has acquired two major YA thrillers from US authors Meredith Adamo and Channelle Desamours.
Editorial director Alex Antscherl acquired UK and Commonwealth rights in Adamo’s Not Like Other Girls and a second book in an exclusive submission from Alessandra Birch on behalf of Andrea Morrison at Writers House. It is expected to publish in 2024.
Antscherl said: “Meredith Adamo’s début novel is a twisty and surprising YA mystery, with a side helping of romance. But more than that, it’s an insightful and brilliant commentary on the importance of consent. I know young people reading this will be as affected by the poignant backstory as they are addicted to the page-turning thriller.”
Adamo said: “I can’t think of a more wonderful team than the one at Bloomsbury Children’s to bring this novel – and Jo, the funny, imperfect, sometimes self-destructive teen sleuth at the centre of it – to readers in the UK and beyond. I hope readers love the twists and turns (and romance!) of this mystery, but most of all, I hope Jo’s story resonates with every reader who needs it. I’m just delighted that Not Like Other Girls has found its perfect home.”
Antscherl and commissioning editor Carla Hutchinson acquired UK and Commonwealth rights (excluding Canada) from Molly Ker Hawn at the Bent Agency for Desamours’ Needy Little Things, which will publish in January 2025.
Hutchinson said: “Channelle has written such a phenomenal story – it feels fresh, authentic and truly exhilarating! What also makes this story stand out is the diverse representation. Sariyah, Malcom and Deja are some of the most authentic young Black characters in YA today. They are fully rounded and so relatable. Channelle has created a slick-smart concept and the plot has so many delicious twists and turns that readers will devour.”
