Bloomsbury has acquired actor Sue Cleaver’s first book, titled A Work in Progress. It is described as “a highly personal and engaging book that will resonate with every middle-aged woman who feels newly invisible, silenced, underestimated or diminished".
Head of Bloomsbury General Katy Follain acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Amanda Harris at YMU Literary, with publication scheduled for 26th September 2024. Bloomsbury says publication will be supported by an "extensive" marketing and publicity campaign.
In the book, Cleaver shares her experiences and life stories, reflects on how they made her feel and what she learned, and offers advice and wisdom for others who find themselves in similar situations.
The synopsis continues: “Are you a chronic overthinker, do you have anxiety, or suffer from self-doubt? She has been there, done that, and is still learning from it. Training as a therapist was only the start of her journey of self-discovery and at 60 she feels more empowered to live life to the full than ever before.”
Cleaver is an actress best known for playing Eileen Grimshaw in “Coronation Street”. Her other TV credits include “City Central”, “Dinnerladies”, “This is Personal: The Hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper” and “Casualty”. She took part in "I’m a Celebrity: Get Me Out of Here!" in 2022 and is a regular panellist on "Loose Women".
Follain said: “When I met Sue, I was struck by how eloquent she was about the disruptive nature of a midlife crisis, the crushing consequences of listening to your inner critic, and the importance of understanding yourself and cultivating positive habits. She is so passionate and inspiring about how you can turn your life around, and I can’t wait to see her spreading her message with this book this autumn.”
Cleaver commented: “I truly believe we all have innate wisdom, we’ve just lost the ability to access it. We get caught up in the act of searching for answers from gurus, sages and experts, but we are all of those things already. This book will, I hope, give women the confidence they need to be more fulfilled and happier, as I share my own journey. I’m delighted to be doing this with Bloomsbury and can’t wait to talk about what’s in the book around publication.”
