Bloomsbury has acquired The Year of Miracles: 67 Recipes to Save Your Life by Ella Risbridger, the author's second cookbook.
Risbridger has been touted as one of the UK’s rising stars on the food scene. Her first cookbook, Midnight Chicken (Bloomsbury), won the Guild of Food Writers’ General Cookbook Award in 2020. The Sunday Times has described her as "the most talented British debut writer in a generation", and her fans include Nigella Lawson, Diana Henry and Nigel Slater, among others.
The Year of Miracles is a cookbook and kitchen journal written during "a year of grief and hope and change". Described as "full of courage and wisdom" recipes including fancy fish pie, chimichurri courgettes, quadruple carb soup, blackberry miso birthday cake and sticky toffee Guinness brownies.
World rights were bought from Daisy Parente at Lutyens & Rubinstein. The book is slated for publication in May 2022.
Risbridger said: "I'm thrilled to be back at Bloomsbury with my wonderful team, and even more thrilled to be back with this book in particular. It's the book of my heart, the most personal thing I've ever written (and definitely the best recipes). It's the story of what happens after the worst thing happens: about how you go on when your world falls apart, and when everything changes. How you can learn to live in the chaos of life rather than escaping it. It’s taken me three years to write The Year of Miracles, through grief and a pandemic and falling in love again (and again), and I can't believe that now I finally get to talk about it. Also, it has jokes."
Parente added: "This is a cookbook I will use forever, it’s a meditation on grief I will send to all the people I love and, somehow, it’s also so funny and joyful. It packs a real punch, and I could not be prouder to work with Ella."
Commissioning editor Xa Shaw Stewart added: "I'm already looking forward to next May, when readers will have the chance to discover Ella's fried jam sandwiches, cherry-marzipan-chocolate cookies and multiple courgette recipes for themselves. Every page shines with hard-won perspicacity and practical magic – this really might be a cookbook to change your life."
Last year Risbridger was signed to Nosy Crow to write her first children’s books, which will include two middle-grade novels and a poetry anthology.
