Bloomsbury Education has signed two new “thrilling” historical adventure books for children aged seven to nine by author Iszi Lawrence and illustrator Rebecca Bagley.
Commissioning editor Hannah Rolls acquired world all language rights from Jo Sarsby at Jo Sarsby Management for the text and from Molly Jamieson at United Agents for Bagley’s artwork. The two books, The Time Machine Next Door: Explorers and Milkshakes and The Time Machine Next Door: Scientists and Stripy Socks are scheduled to be published simultaneously on 13th April 2023.
It is the first time Bloomsbury Education has published two books in the same series, by the same author, on the same day, and Bagley has based the character of Alex in The Time Machine Next Door books on Lawrence.
The Time Machine Next Door series sees Sunil and his extraordinary neighbour Alex, who just happens to have built a time machine next door, travel on historical adventures that will make readers sparkle with curiosity — as lesser known fabulous facts about real-life characters in history burst into life.
The publisher’s synopsis adds: “There’s trouble closer to home with the mysterious Mr Shaykes, the inventive milkshake maker and local café owner — and his nosey pet Kiwi, who certainly isn’t native to Manchester!”
In the second book, the adventurous team meet a very cross Sir Isaac Newton, a delightful young Charles Darwin and his worms and a frustrated Caroline Herschel who seems to need a pair of stripy socks. A further two books in The Time Machine Next Door series are to be published in 2024.
