Bloomsbury to publish Crossan's first poetry anthology
Bloomsbury will publish Tomorrow Is Beautiful, the first poetry anthlogy complied and edited by author Sarah Crossan.
The anthology will focus on hope and is billed as "perfect for anyone who may be struggling to find the right words of comfort, joy and optimism—in this year and beyond." The title will include a selection of classic and contemporary poems, original poems by Crossan as well as a selection of her favourite poems from her verse novels.
Zöe Griffiths, fiction editorial director, bought UK Commonwealth rights from Julia Churchill of A M Heath Literary Agents. Tomorrow Is Beautiful will publish in hardback, e-book and audio in September 2021.
Griffiths said: "Sarah’s passion and message has always been that poetry belongs to and is for everyone. I can think of no one better to curate a collection that provides hope and uplifts its readers. Sarah opens doors and minds to poetry, and Tomorrow Is Beautiful is an utterly gorgeous extension of her own work and words."
Crossan commented: "I have always believed poetry should serve everyone, and as the Irish Children’s Literature Laureate from 2018 to 2020 I spearheaded a project called We Are The Poets, which sought to deliver poems to those who thought it couldn’t be theirs. I hope this anthology will be an extension of this work with the added goal of inviting readers to feel hopeful about tomorrow.
"Reading, and specifically poetry, has guided me through the dark days of this pandemic and I cannot wait to share these word-cures with as many people as possible. Choosing poems from greats such as Langston Hughes and Emily Dickinson wasn’t easy, but it was wildly exciting. Even more exciting was choosing incredible work from contemporary poets and having the opportunity to create new work myself."
Crossan is the author of YA fiction including the CILIP Carnegie Medal winning verse-novel One (Bloomsbury Children's, 2016). Her first novel for adults, Here Is the Beehive, was published by Bloomsbury Circus last year.
