Gallery Books has acquired The Satsuma Complex, the "hilarious and original" debut novel by comedian Bob Mortimer.
Publishing director Holly Harris acquired world rights from Caroline Chignell at PBJ Management. The Simon & Schuster imprint will publish the novel on 27th October, releasing simultaneously in hardback, e-book and an audiobook narrated by the author. The book will be supported by a "major" marketing and PR campaign.
"Gary Thorn goes for a pint with a work acquaintance called Brendan," the synopsis reads. "When Brendan leaves early, Gary meets a girl in the pub. He doesn’t catch her name, but falls for her anyway. When she suddenly disappears without saying goodbye, all Gary has to remember her by is the book she was reading: The Satsuma Complex. But when Brendan goes missing, Gary needs to track down the girl he now calls Satsuma to get some answers.
"And so begins Gary’s quest, through the estates and pie shops of south London, to finally bring some love and excitement into his unremarkable life."
Mortimer’s memoir And Away… was published by Gallery in 2021 and recently hit the Paperback Non-Fiction number one spot. According to Nielsen BookScan, he has sold 545,500 copies for £5.5m, with the hardback of And Away... shifting 357,670 copies.
He said: "I like the people in the book very much and wish them all the best for the future."
Harris added: "Bob is his own unique brand of genius, and The Satsuma Complex is a hilarious and original novel which will delight everyone who reads it. We can’t wait to publish this funny and charming book in October."
