Templar Publishing, an imprint of Bonnier Books UK, will publish the Templar Illustration Prize-winning Bread, Buns and Biscuits by Paula White.
World rights were acquired by Katie Haworth, publishing head, directly from White. Bread, Buns and Biscuits will be published in October 2021.
White won the 2019 Templar Illustration Prize with her lyrical story about a small fishing town by the sea in 1940s Suffolk. In Bread, Buns and Biscuits, a young boy watches the fishermen go to sea and marvels at their bravery. The story of a close-knit community was inspired by White’s own family history, says the publisher.
Haworth said: "It was an enormous pleasure to see Paula White win the 2019 Templar Illustration award. During judging, we displayed the submissions on a large screen in our board room and as soon as Paula’s work appeared there was a collective ‘Oooh’ from the judging panel, which included illustrators Jonny Duddle and Frann Preston-Gannon. What so struck us about Paula’s artwork was the atmosphere and the vivid sense of a place and time that it invokes.
"This is a story with timeless and universal themes that will chime with young readers: a boy watches his baker father work and wonders why he doesn’t seem as brave as the town’s fishermen. He worries about his own place in the world, as many children do. We are thrilled to be adding this evocative picture book to the Templar list."
White added: "I was delighted to win the 2019 Templar Illustration Prize. To have the opportunity for my work to be seen by the judges and the team at Templar was priceless, as was the feedback and encouragement I received at the awards ceremony. I consider myself very lucky to be working with the Templar team and I know they are as excited as me for the release of Bread, Buns and Biscuits. I can’t wait to share the story."
