Born To Run: Bruce Springsteen autobiography coming in September

Bruce Springsteen has penned his autobiography, set for international release through Simon & Schuster this September.

The famous musician has been privately writing the book, named Born To Run after one of his most famous songs, for the last seven years, according to the publisher.

The title promises to give the reader a glimpse inside Springsteen’s mind, as well as reveal the personal struggles which inspired his best work.

It will be published in hardcover, e-book, and audio by Simon & Schuster in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and India on 27th September 2016.

“Writing about yourself is a funny business,” Springsteen has written in his book.  “But in a project like this, the writer has made one promise, to show the reader his mind.  In these pages, I’ve tried to do this.”

Ian Chapman, c.e.o and publisher of Simon & Schuster UK, said Springsteen would be on anyone’s list of top cultural personalities to publish. “If you were to ask any publisher to name a cultural figure whose autobiography would provoke the greatest enthusiasm, Bruce Springsteen’s name would be on every list,” he said. “Beyond being one of the most admired individuals in the world, he is a captivating storyteller with a unique way of expressing himself. Born to Run brilliantly captures his remarkable artistic life.”

S&S said Springsteen has been privately writing the autobiography over the past seven years, beginning work on it in 2009, after performing with the E Street Band at the Super Bowl’s halftime show.

Born to Run will describe his time growing up in Freehold, New Jersey amid the “poetry, danger, and darkness” that fuelled his imagination as well as  “vividly recount his relentless drive to become a musician, his early days as a bar band king in Asbury Park, and the rise of the E Street Band.”

“With disarming candour, he also tells for the first time the story of the personal struggles that inspired his best work, and shows us why the song ‘Born to Run’ reveals more than we previously realised,” the publisher added.

Simon & Schuster acquired the title in an exclusive submission from Springsteen’s legal representatives, Allen Grubman and Jonathan Ehrlich of the law firm Grubman Shire & Meiselas, P.C. Page Six news has breported he received a $10m advance for the title, although S&S has not confirmed this.

Rights have already been sold to publishers in nine others countries: Editions Albin Michel in France; Mondadori in Italy; Heyne in Germany; Natur & Kultur in Sweden; Spectrum in the Netherlands, Politikens in Denmark; Cappelen Damn in Norway; Otava in Finland; and Penguin Random Spain.

Simon & Schuster has previously published Springsteen’s illustrated book with Frank Caruso, Outlaw Pete, in 2014.
