Hodder & Stoughton is to publish a biography of David Bowie by music journalist Lesley-Ann Jones, entitled Hero: David Bowie, this September.
Hannah Black, publisher at Hodder & Stoughton, acquired world rights from Ivan Mulcahy at Mulcahy Associates.
In Hero: David Bowie, Jones turns her attention to Bowie in a "candid exploration of the man behind the reinventions". The book will be a journey to "discover the real David Jones; as well as the David Bowie who lived eternally in the spotlight. Covering his music, his lifestyle, the golden-year highs and the wilderness lows, this is Bowie as you've never seen him before."
Jones is the author of a number of biographies including Freddie Mercury: The Definitive Biography (Hodder) and Ride a White Swan: The Lives and Death of Marc Bolan (Hodder).
Black said: "Lesley-Ann Jones is an exemplary music journalist and biographer. As a long-time fan and associate of Bowie, she will bring her meticulous research together with her personal insights and understanding to create an extensive and detailed portrait of a one of music’s greatest heroes."
Jones said: "I am thrilled to be writing this. I met David Bowie when I was a child, became a music writer thanks to him, and worked with him down the years. I used to joke that a call from David to write his biography was the Holy Grail of publishing. That is never going to happen now, of course. But I relish the opportunity to tell his story from a personal point of view."
Hodder & Stoughton will publish the hardback in September 2016.
Bowie died earlier this year aged 69.
