Cambridge University Press (CUP) has snapped up Adultish: The Body Image Book for Life, the third book in Dr Charlotte Markey’s body image series.
Sarah Marsh, commissioning editor for medicine, acquired world rights including digital directly from the author. The book will be published for readers aged 16 years and over in September 2024 and be supported with a "major" marketing and publicity campaign.
Billed as the "survival kit" for young adults, Adultish is the "ultimate guide to taking on adulthood with confidence and body positivity". Markey aims to promote self-acceptance and has filled the book with Q&As, and "myth-busting", real-life stories. Adultish is preceded by The Body Image Book for Girls and Being You: The Body Image Book for Boys, both published by CUP, and is the first in the series to be written for young adults.
Markey said: “Since the pandemic, mental health concerns – including body image concerns – have increased exponentially and although young people have access to information online and on social media, a lot of it is inaccurate and misleading. My new book offers evidence-based and actionable steps to help youth take on adulthood with a sense of empowerment.”
Marsh added: “We’re thrilled to be publishing the next book in Dr Markey’s fabulous, pioneering body image series and her first book for a young adult audience. Charlotte possesses a singular talent for distilling the latest science and research into books that bring understanding, enjoyment, and practical guidance to general readers from teens to adults.”
