Independent publisher Candy Jar has signed reprint rights for the original Ivor the Engine picture book written by Oliver Postgate and illustrated by Peter Firmin.
Head of publishing Shaun Russell acquired worldwide print, e-book and audio rights from Daniel Postgate at Smallfilms, the owners of "Ivor the Engine". Ivor the Engine will be published in hardback with plans for a second book, Ivor’s Outing, to follow in 2024.
Originally published in 1962, Ivor the Engine was also adapted into an eponymous television programme which originally aired in black and white on ITV. The "uniquely soothing" series will also now be aired on BritBox and ITV.
Candy Jar will reprint a "faithful" reproduction of the first ever book. The "charming" adventure series followed Ivor the steam engine on his journeys between Welsh mining villages and the first book sees Ivor longing to join the village choir and, with the help of the fairground owner and his pipe organ, Ivor’s wish may come true.
Postgate commented: "My father, and his partner Peter Firmin, really pushed the boundaries of great storytelling. I believe that children, parents, grandparents, and perhaps lovers of trains, will thoroughly enjoy the early days of Britain’s best loved locomotive hero."
