Canongate has acquired the latest and final novel in the Raven and Fisher series written by Ambrose Parry; the pen name for Chris Brookmyre and Dr Marisa Haetzman.
The novel, titled The Death of Shame, follows their double-shortlisting at the 2024 CWA Daggers award for the novel Voices of the Dead and their digital-exclusive short story The Spendthrift and the Swallow.
It will also mark the 30th book Brookmyre has published since his debut, Quite Ugly One Morning, was published by Little, Brown in 1996.
The novel will be published on 31st July 2025.
Ambrose Parry said: "The Death of Shame will really put our readers through the wringer, as the stakes have never been so high for Raven and Sarah. As such, it is a fittingly emotional conclusion to their odyssey and, looking to the future, we are excited to discover where writing as Ambrose Parry might take us next."
The Death of Shame is set in 1854, Edinburgh. Apprentice Sarah Fisher is helping to fund Dr Will Raven’s emerging medical practice in exchange for being secretly trained as a medic, should the rules barring women ever change.

Drawing upon historical events, the novel takes Raven and Fisher into a treacherous labyrinth of exploitation, corruption, high-level complicity and Victorian-style revenge porn.
Brookmyre is an internationally bestselling and multi-award-winning author and Haetzman a consultant anaesthetist of 20 years’ experience. The couple teamed up to write a series of historical crime thrillers, featuring the darkest of Victorian Edinburgh’s secrets.

The Way of All Flesh, The Art of Dying and A Corruption of Blood were shortlisted for the McIlvanney Prize for Scottish Crime Book of the Year. A Corruption of Blood was shortlisted for the CWA Historical Dagger in 2022. In 2024, Voices of the Dead was shortlisted for the CWA Historical Dagger and their short story A Spendthrift and the Swallow was shortlisted for the CWA Short Dagger award.
