Canongate has snapped up Nature’s Genius: Evolution’s Lessons for a Better World by Professor David Farrier.
Editorial director Simon Thorogood acquired world English rights from Carrie Plitt at Felicity Bryan Associates, and Canongate will publish the book in May 2025 in hardback, trade paperback, e-book and audiobook.
The synopsis states: "In Nature’s Genius, David Farrier travels widely, from the Arctic to the Hudson River and the London underground, considering everything from toxin-resistant fish, city-dwelling spiders weaving new patterns to birds that forget their songs – all in a bid to answer the question of what nature’s remarkable ingenuity has to teach us. The book argues that we should see it as a model for creating a more sustainable planet for all living things."
Farrier, who is professor of literature and the environment at the University of Edinburgh, said: "Evolution has been the source of nature’s genius since the beginning. Now, when the natural world is under such extraordinary strain, it has much to teach us about how to make a future in which all of life can thrive."
Thorogood added: "Nature’s Genius is a deep dive into the unfettered creativity of the natural world, one often forced to adapt to the consequences of man’s impact, and one where we may find a new way of thinking about our collective futures."
Plitt said: "David Farrier here turns his unique gaze on what we can learn from the natural world, and the result is fascinating, mind-expanding and, hopefully, will shift our perspective on how we can live with nature."
