Canongate has snapped up The Swedish Art of Ageing Well by Margareta Magnusson, author of The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning (Canongate).
Helena Gonda, senior commissioning editor, acquired English rights in the UK and Commonwealth excluding Canada, Australia and New Zealand from Susanna Lea of Susanna Lea Associates. Magnusson’s first book is currently being made into a major TV series by the producers of “Queer Eye”, with Amy Poehler set to narrate and episodes slated to air in 2023.
In her first book, Magnusson explored the Swedish tradition of döstädning — the practice of clearing out unnecessary belongings.
“Now, unburdened by baggage both real and emotional, she reflects on her early days growing up in Sweden as well as raising her family around the world, offering her sharp wit and wisdom on how to age gracefully,” the new book’s synopsis reads.
“The Swedish Art of Ageing Well is a gentle and welcome reminder that, no matter your age, there are always fresh discoveries ahead and pleasures to be enjoyed every day. It is a guide to a life well lived, the wonder of the everyday and the lessons that age brings – from wearing stripes and eating chocolate to embracing change and taking care of something or someone other than yourself.”
Gonda said: “I’m delighted to be publishing this joyous little book of humorous and touching essays – Margareta’s advice helps us all to focus on what makes each day worth living and I know her wise words will resonate with so many.”
Magnusson was born in Gothenburg, Sweden, and has worked for many years as an artist. Her work has been exhibited in many countries including Singapore and Hong Kong.
“Hardly anyone is older than I am,” she said. “I have had a very happy life and thought that with 88 years of experience I might be able to help others have a happy life and old age, too.”
