Canongate has won a "game-changing" book about the history of games by Tim Clare.
Publisher-at-large Francis Bickmore acquired world rights in all languages to The Game Changers from Sophie Lambert at the C&W Agency, and Canongate will publish the book on 7th November 2024.
"From scratching shapes in the sand to the combative bonding of festive board games, humans have created games to encourage fun, competition, collaboration and, in the very hardest of times, escape," the synopsis says. "In this fascinating and entertaining look at games throughout history, Tim Clare explores the legal highs of a good dice roll, the thrills of a predatory race game, and the tactile pleasures of the games that age with us through our lives."
Clare is the author of We Can’t All Be Astronauts (Ebury Press) and Coward (Canongate), as well as the novels The Honours (Canongate) and The Ice House (Canongate). "Board-game history is really the history of human civilisation – how we’ve learned to live with one another, make deals, manage the ups and downs of luck and take on different roles," he said. "And it’s a history that’s just reaching its most exciting chapter."
Bickmore added: "Tim Clare is obsessed with games of all kinds and his infectious curiosity makes him the perfect tour guide to the subject. He reveals the history of games but also unlocks the mystery of why they are so fun to play and also so good for our brains. It’s the dream Christmas gift book to read when cooling down from the last ferocious round of Monopoly."
