Transworld has signed Bad Tourists, a psychological destination thriller by Caro Carver.
Fiction publisher Sarah Adams bought UK and Commonwealth rights in a two-book deal from Alice Lutyens at Curtis Brown. It which will be published by Bantam in July 2024.
The blurb reads: “Friends Darcy, Camilla and Kate are on the trip of a lifetime at the exotic Sapphire Island Resort in the Maldives. On paper they’re here to celebrate Darcy’s divorce, but these women share one tragic past – a single, terrible night which joined them way before they even met. A night that left them ruined, grieving and perhaps even vengeful. All is not as it seems in paradise, and this is no ordinary friendship. Will they all make the return journey?”
Adams said: “Caro’s opening pages pack such a punch, demonstrating immediately her wicked imagination and talent for surprises. If, like me, you binge-watched ’The White Lotus’, then I can assure you Bad Tourists is your next obsession – immersive, fun and vibrant, yet also devilishly dark.”
Carver said: “I have long been fascinated by representations of female rage and wanted to write for and about women who are very tired of it all, but found this rage to be woefully under-explored, so when the idea for Bad Tourists arrived I cleared the decks and wrote in a frenzy until the smart and vengeful trio that is Kate, Camilla, and Darcy were bubbling off the page. Sarah’s plans for Bad Tourists are breathtaking in ambition and I cannot wait for this book to transport readers to this dreamy, and dangerous, Maldivian resort next summer.”
Carver lives in Scotland with her husband and four children. She is reader in Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow, teaches for the Faber Academy and the Curtis Brown Academy, and regularly speaks on panels and hosts events on writing. She is also published by HarperCollins as C J Cooke for her gothic thrillers.
