Cassava Republic has snapped up an "incredible debut" set in 1960s Bradford from Marcia Hutchinson. Editor Layla Mohammed acquired UK and Commonwealth (excluding Canada) and the African continent rights for The Mercy Step from Carla Briner at Pontas Agency.
Publishing in July 2025, the novel follows Mercy, one of several children to a devout mother and a violent father, who are Jamaican immigrants. The synopsis continues: "She struggles to find her place in the world, surrounded by flawed adults and a family she feels like an outsider in, with books and learning as her only escape."
Hutchinson said: "I’m more than excited to be signed by Cassava Republic for my solo debut novel. The enthusiasm which the team showed for my work when we met absolutely bowled me over. I’m also very proud to be working with a Black-led publishing house."
Briner said: "The Mercy Step is a novel and a voice unlike any other, and I am delighted that Marcia’s incredible debut has found the perfect home with Layla, Bibi and their fantastic team."
Mohamed said: "A whirlwind of a debut, The Mercy Step grabs the reader by the heart on the opening page and doesn’t let go! Marcia’s use of language is audacious and distinct as she deftly moves between the tragic and the absurd. I am beyond delighted to share this book with the world as our lead title for 2025."
