Cassell has bagged the debut book from Cosmopolitan Influencer of the Year 2019, Florence Given, billed as “the only book for young women trying to determine feminism on their terms”.
Women Don’t Owe You Pretty promises a progressive take on how to confront the oppressive attitudes towards women and their bodies in a patriarchal society.
Given, a London-based artist, campaigner and writer, uses her 253,000 Instagram followers to raise awareness of social issues from sexuality and consent to race and gender.
The book's synopsis states: “In a world that tells us we're not good enough, it's time we stopped directing our anger and insecurities onto ourselves (and each other), and time to start fighting back by challenging and questioning the toxic structures of the patriarchal society. Women owe men nothing, least of all pretty.
“Filled with Florence's own original artwork and essential advice on issues from body image, self-esteem and self-love, to relationships, sexuality and dating, Women Don't Owe You Pretty is an accessible leap into feminism, for people at all stages of their journey who are seeking to reshape and transform the way they view themselves.”
Given explained: “This book is full of the lessons I wish someone had told me, before I had to learn the hard way through experience. It’s time to change the narrative women have been bombarded with their whole lives.”
Romilly Morgan, senior commissioning editor at Octopus Publishing Group, acquired world rights in all languages, excluding the US and Canada, from Abigail Bergstrom at Gleam Titles. It will be published on 11th June 2020.
Morgan said: "Florence is already the voice of a new generation, but in this book she also holds up a megaphone and, at the top of her lungs, belts out her progressive feminist message: ‘life is too short, dump them’. Come publication, everyone will be listening.”
