Cassell, an imprint of the Octopus Publishing Group, has acquired Redemption: My Story, a "brutally honest and inspirational" memoir from Watford football club’s record-breaking striker and captain Troy Deeney.
Trevor Davies, publisher, acquired world all language rights from David Luxton at DLA. Publication is scheduled for 30th September.
The memoir will share stories of self-sabotage, from simply not turning up to Aston Villa's football trials as a teenager and playing while drunk to being imprisoned for affray at the height of his career and how despite all this, he went on to score more than 20 goals in three successive seasons and become the club captain, an FA Cup finalist, promotion winner and record scorer. Behind the football persona is a "remarkable story of resilience, hardship and self reflection", the publisher said.
Deeney said: "I'm excited to be publishing my memoir this autumn. I believe my story is a unique one, but will resonate with a lot of people. It will demonstrate how you should never give up on what you believe in. Redemption is a truly honest account of my life, from a rocky childhood and tough start to my career, to incredible highs both on and off the pitch. I believe this book will appeal to those from all walks of life and, importantly, to those who've had to face adversity and yet still want to pursue their dreams."
Davies commented: "We are absolutely thrilled to be publishing Troy’s memoir. Fans of all clubs respect and admire Troy for being down-to-earth, open and engaging when he speaks, and Redemption carries that same candidness. His story is unique, gripping, inspiring and relatable to so many who’ve had to conquer their demons and cope with their past."
