Charo Press is to publish Jeferson Tenório's "forceful and timely" novel The Flipside of Skin, which has just been named the 2021 winner of Brazil's most prestigious literary prize, the Jabuti.
The Prêmio Jabuti is the oldest literary award in Brazil, awarded for the best novel of the year, as judged by the Brazilian Book Chamber. The Edinburgh-based independent secured world English rights from Laurence Laluyaux at RCW, with publication planned for 2023.
Charco's editorial director, Carolina Orloff, said: "The Flipside of Skin is a forceful and timely novel about identity, complex racial relations, violence and Blackness. Jeferson beautifully crafts an honest and sensitive narrative about family that has the complexities of racism at its centre. We are excited for UK readers to discover this incredible new talent."
Tenório was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1977. Based in Porto Alegre, his literary debut was elected book of the year by the Rio Grande do Sul Writers’ Association.The Flipside of Skin is his debut novel in English.
