Chatto & Windus will publish The Girls’ author Emma Cline’s first short story collection in 2020.
Poppy Hampson, editorial director at Chatto & Windus has acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to the American author's short story collection Daddy, from Anna Webber at United Agents on behalf of Bill Clegg at The Clegg Agency. It will be published in 2020.
"The stories in Cline’s first collection consider the dark corners of human experience, exploring the fault lines of power between men and women, parents and children, past and present," the publisher said.
Cline’s debut, The Girls, was inspired by events surrounding Charles Manson and his followers. It was snapped up by Chatto & Windus in a rumoured seven-figure deal after a 12-publisher auction. It became a bestseller, and the highest selling debut novel of 2016 according to the publisher (it sold 168,536 copies for £1.2m in total according to Nielsen BookScan). It has been published in 40 countries worldwide.
Cline’s short stories have appeared in the New Yorker, Granta and the Paris Review, where she was awarded the Plimpton Prize for Fiction, and have been selected for inclusion in the 2017 and 2018 versions of the Best American Short Story anthologies (Houghton Mifflin). Her story “What Can You Do with a General” is shortlisted for the Audible Sunday Times Short Story Award 2019, which is announced on 12th Sept.
She was selected as a Granta Best Young American Novelist in 2017 and is based in New York.
