The Borough Press has announced a two-book deal with novelist Tracy Chevalier.
Suzie Dooré, editor-at-large, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Jonny Geller at Curtis Brown.
These will follow next autumn’s publication of her 11th novel, The Glassmaker, part of a previous deal, which Borough described as her “most ambitious and dazzling novel to date”. It spans centuries, and follows the life of Orsola, a woman living on the Venetian island of Murano, who defies tradition to become a glassmaker like her father and brothers.
The untitled 12th novel, scheduled for 2026, will retell the true story of an unsolved murder in Northumberland in 1826, from the perspective of Agnes, a young woman who had befriended the victim.
Chevalier, who divides her time between London and Dorset, said of her continued partnership with HarperCollins: “I’m really happy to continue my long partnership with HarperCollins and The Borough Press. They trust me and let me get on with writing the best books I can. We have had great moments together and I expect that to continue with these next two books.”
Geller said: “Tracy and I are both thrilled to be publishing two new books with The Borough Press and Suzie and her team, and I am looking forward to publication of The Glassmaker, which may be my favourite of her novels so far.”
Dooré said: “A new novel from Tracy is such a gift, and I can’t wait to deliver her 12th and 13th books into the hands of her eager readers.
“This new two-book contract will follow on from the extraordinary The Glassmaker, which we publish next autumn and which heralds a new direction in Tracy’s writing whilst keeping all the elements her many devoted readers cherish: gorgeous writing, unforgettable characters and a stunning sense of time and place.”
Chevalier has sold 1.78 million for £11.7m, according to Nielsen BookScan, with her bestseller Girl with a Pearl Earring (HarperCollins), on 488,326 copies sold in paperback since publication in 2000.
