Ryland Peters & Small imprint Cico Books will publish The Body Tarot, written by its own export manager and former bookseller Emma McArthur.
Carmel Edmonds, senior commissioning editor, acquired world rights and publication is slated for 22nd March 2022.
The Body Tarot will celebrate the magic of the body and tap into the wisdom of the subconscious with a 72-card anatomical-themed tarot deck and guidebook. Readers will learn about how the body works and how those processes are allegories for the situations we face in our daily lives.
McArthur has worked in illustrated publishing for nearly 10 years, and previous to that as a bookseller at Waterstones.
She said: "I’ve always been fascinated with form and structure of the body, from attending life drawing classes and being interested in art and illustration since I was young. In 2018 I started making a drawing a day to kickstart a creative hiatus. During this time, my interest in bones, anatomy and the human form really started to come into focus, and these made up much of my content during this time. It made me think about our body’s spiritual connection and how each organ is connected to one of the five elements. I suggested the idea for a tarot deck linked to the elements, really showcasing the human organs and opening up this system to a new audience, and the publisher said yes! Anatomy art is becoming more visible with artists exploring the intriguing world of the body both inside and out, and portraying them in their work. I’m thrilled to be sharing my passion and enthusiasm for anatomy illustration in this traditional tarot deck!"
Edmonds commented: "We are really excited to be publishing The Body Tarot with Emma. Tarot has truly entered the mainstream, and this deck, featuring Emma’s intricate illustrations, will appeal to beginners and devotees alike. Her unique take on the traditional deck will allow readers to gain advice and wisdom, all while learning about how amazing our bodies really are."
