Thriller writer Clare Mackintosh is set to move to HarperFiction in a two-book deal. Managing director and publisher Frankie Gray and editorial director Belinda Toor acquired UK and Commonwealth rights for two gripping domestic thrillers from Sheila Crowley at Curtis Brown. The first book, It’s Not What You Think, is scheduled for hardback release in January 2026 with a second novel to follow in 2027.
Mackintosh was previously published by Sphere, with her novels becoming bestsellers and translation rights having been sold in 40 territories.
The first of her new novels is a stand-alone thriller that follows Nadeeka Prasann as her "ordinary life is turned on its head". The synopsis continues: "She races home, convinced she’s about to catch her partner with another woman. Instead, she finds him murdered and her house a crime scene. Everyone has a secret, but only one person knows the truth… and it’s not what you think."
Gray said: "With her debut, I Let You Go, in 2015, Clare established herself as queen of the heart-pounding twist, and a star of the crime thriller genre – a reputation that has only grown in the years since. As her long-time fan and as a publisher, I have adored and admired Clare’s books since the start, and it is an enormous honour to now be working with her. Her phenomenal new book It’s Not What You Think had the whole HarperFiction team on the edge of our seats and we have ambitious plans to share it with readers across the world."

Toor said: "Having been a Clare Mackintosh fan from afar, I am absolutely thrilled to be working with Clare to press her stories into the hands of even more readers. It’s Not What You Think turns all the tropes of the genre on their head. It’s taut, and filled with emotion, clever characters and breathtaking corkscrew twists that I can promise readers won’t see coming."
Mackintosh said: "I’m incredibly grateful to Lucy Malagoni and the team at Little, Brown Book Group for their hard work and passion over the past 10 years. Moving on is never easy, but I’m excited for my next chapter with HarperCollins and looking forward to sharing my new book with readers. It’s Not What You Think contains the biggest twist I’ve worked on since I Let You Go, and I can’t wait to hear what readers and booksellers make of it."
Crowley said: "Clare Mackintosh is one of the most focused and hardest working authors I know. She is so supportive of indie booksellers and fellow authors. This new novel will widen her reach and is perfect for a major drama adaptation."
