DK Children’s has signed Classics podcaster Liv Albert’s first titles for kids: two illustrated retellings based on Greek and Roman mythology.
Francesca Young, DK Children’s associate publishing director, acquired world rights for the titles, including audio, from Anna Worrall at the The Gernert Company. The first, a retelling of Homer’s Odyssey, will be released in May next year. The Little Book of Bad Myths will follow in June 2027, and is described as the beginning of a new series for “Percy Jackson and Horrible History heads”.
Illustrators for the two books have yet to be announced, but DK promises the artwork “will have a wide-reaching, classic style with global appeal”.
Since 2017, Toronto-based Albert has fronted and produced the popular Let’s Talk About Myths, Baby! podcast, doing more than 600 deep dives on ancient Roman and Greek mythology. She has previously published two titles for adults: Greek Mythology: The Gods, Goddesses, and Heroes Handbook and Nectar of the Gods, a guide to mythical cocktails.
Young said: "Liv lives and breathes the Classics, so of course we had to approach her for a fresh new approach to the The Odyssey. She was born to introduce this text to modern readers. Her witty writing style is an absolute joy, which we’re sure will leave readers spellbound for years to come.”
Albert added: “My love for the world of Greek mythology is rooted in the oral tradition, the works we credit to Homer and what they meant to the ancient world – and our own today. We often think of The Odyssey as a simple adventure story, but there is so much more to the ancient epic and I couldn’t be more excited to retell it for young readers.”
