Fleet has acquired We Swim to the Shark, a personal story of big fears, strange fish and diving by Georgie Codd.
Rhiannon Smith struck the deal for UK and Commonwealth rights in the work from Ed Wilson at Johnson and Alcock for publication with Fleet in spring 2020.
Described as "humorous and absorbing", the book centres on Codd's phobia "of unknown waters and the large fish lurking within them" and quest to face her fears by becoming a scuba diver.
Codd, who is also known for her fiction as the chief UK contributor to storytelling app The Silent History, said of the deal for her debut in non-fiction: "For a long time I’ve been trying to conquer my ichthyophobia by swimming with the largest fish in the sea, the whale shark: one of the world’s most mysterious creatures. It’s become an obsession and has opened the door to all sorts of sights and characters. Partnering with Fleet to share this story is the latest exciting step on the adventure. I can’t wait to see what happens next."
Smith said: "Georgie is truly brave and her ability to translate that onto the page with both beauty and humour is wonderful to read."
