Cogito has scooped Believe in Them: One Woman’s Fight for Justice for Refugee Children by Luma Mufleh, founding director of Fugees Family, a non-profit organisation devoted to educational justice for refugee and immigrant children.
Publisher Diana Janney acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Vanessa Kerr at Abner Stein on behalf of Aevitas. The memoir is scheduled for publication in spring 2023.
Janney commented: “I knew instantly I had to publish Mufleh’s Believe in Them. This is a powerful personal portrayal of the plight of refugee children and the part that football plays in the Fugees Family as Mufleh battles for educational justice. It is a book about a fight against prejudice and racism, about learning from adversity, learning how to be part of a team, learning from the experiences of others, learning when to fight and when to walk away.
“It is no surprise that Mufleh’s moving TED talk was viewed more than 1.7 million times. I’d been looking for a strong first non-fiction title for Cogito and Believe in Them will sit well with our list and fulfil our criteria of publishing original, thought-provoking books.”
