Coronet has scooped a "major" biography of Madonna, publishing this autumn to coincide with the star’s 65th year and her biggest world tour to date.
Hannah Black, publisher, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights including Australia and New Zealand, to Madonna: A Rebel Life by Mary Gabriel from Laura Mamelok at Little, Brown US. It will explore Madonna as not only a musician and pop culture icon but a major figure in modern feminism and the LGBTQIA+ movement and will publish on 23rd October.
Gabriel said: “In the cultural imagination represented by newspapers, internet news sites, infotainment TV, Instagram posts, tweets and tabloids Madonna’s image is reduced to sex and outrage. To be fair, there has been plenty of both in her life, but that is not who she is. If Madonna’s story were to be reduced to one word it would be power. She represents the power of a woman without fear. The Madonna I found during five years of research and writing is fierce — in her work, in her life, in her passions. Norman Mailer called her ’our greatest living female artist’. I would add that she is one of the most significant figures of modern times.”
Black added: “I have loved Madonna since I was 10 years old, singing along to her music not yet understanding the lyrics’ meaning but knowing she was something different, someone extraordinary. Her power to inspire, shock and transform has not diminished, and she continues to challenge and champion. Mary is the most committed and impressive of biographers, her attention to nuance, detail and her ability to conjure up one of the most incredible icons of our times is like no other. It’s a huge pleasure and privilege to publish this towering work.”
