CricketMash publications has signed up The Ashes: This Thing Can Be Done by cricket historian Arunabha Sengupta aalongside London-based artist and illustrator Maha.
The book will explore the history of one of the world’s great sporting rivalries retold in an accessible graphic novel format. Adrian Runswick, publisher at CricketMash publications, bought the book directly form the authors. It will be published on 10th March retailing in hardback at £17.99 and in paperback at £12.99.
Its synopsis states: “The Ashes: This Thing Can Be Done sees punchy, well-researched commentary and hilarious insights, alongside more than 1,000 carefully crafted line drawings that capture all the key moments. However, the book does not shy away from controversial issues such as the infamous Bodyline tour of the 1950s and ball-tampering allegations, nor will it ignore the underlying social and political situation at the time, especially where it impacted on cricket, from the First and Second World Wars, Apartheid and the Black Lives Matter movement.”
Runswick said: “When Arun came to me with the idea of retelling The Ashes story in this format to fit with our times I had no hesitation in agreeing to take it on. I already knew the quality of his work as we had previously published Apartheid: A Point to Cover, Arun’s masterly book on cricket in Apartheid South Africa.
"Maha is an extremely talented artist and is also someone we had worked with previously. A project combining their superb talents was always an exciting thought, and the end result is both highly entertaining and visually compelling. We believe that it will appeal both to younger fans raised on social media and to a more traditional reader intrigued by this fresh approach to The Ashes story."
