Daunt Books Publishing is rush-publishing How to Cook a Wolf, MFK Fisher’s classic book on shopping, cooking and eating with courage during a crisis.
Publisher Željka Marošević acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Florence Rees at A M Heath on behalf of Inkwell Management and the MFK Fisher Literary Trust. How to Cook a Wolf will be published for the first time as a standalone book on 4th June 2020.
The publisher said: “Originally written in 1942 to inspire courage in those daunted by wartime shortages, How to Cook a Wolf has continued to rally readers and cooks during times of both scarcity and plenty. Knowing that the last thing hungry people need are hints on cutting back and making do, Fisher gives us licence to dream, experiment and invent adventurous and delicious meals from whatever we can salvage from the back of the cupboard. She shares her spirited and opinionated advice on feeding appetites when ingredients are in short supply, as well as offering dozens of recipe ideas, from making soups and simple omelettes, to baking bread and sprucing up tinned food. The book was revised by Fisher with her peacetime reflections in 1954.”
Marošević said: “We have been proud to publish MFK Fisher for a number of years. Fisher was the godmother of English-language food writing and the personal essay. Like many others, I reached for Fisher when lockdown began and I was struck by how relevant How to Cook a Wolf felt to our current situation. This is a book about appreciating the food you have while inventing and dreaming your way towards the meals, and life, you miss. I can’t believe it’s out of print and I’m so glad to be publishing it in our handsome new edition.”
Daunt Books publishes three other Fisher titles: The Gastronomical Me, Consider the Oyster, and Map of Another Town.
