Del Rey has acquired The Last Dog on Earth, the first of a two book deal from Adrian J Walker, author of The End of the World Running Club, featured in Simon Mayo’s Radio 2 Book Club.
Ebury commissioning editor Emily Yau acquired world all language rights, including film and TV, directly from the author, and will publish in June 2017.
The Last Dog on Earth is described as "a daring story of survival and the lengths you will go to for the one you love" – in this case of the protagonist, a faithful dog. Partly narrated by Lineker, the book's "lovable yet incredibly sweary" mongrel, it is set in a post-apocalyptic UK where an agoraphobic man strives to save an abandoned orphan before it is too late.
Walker said: "I’m thrilled to be writing another two books for Ebury and I’m already having great fun writing the first. After the overwhelming response to The End of the World Running Club, I’m looking forward to exploring more apocalyptic settings and finding new ways of looking at dystopian themes."
Yau said: "We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Adrian back to the Del Rey list with what promises to be another explosive novel. The Last Dog on Earth is bigger, bolder and, in Lineker, Adrian has created a wonderful character with a highly engaging narrative voice. This novel has all the warmth and wit of Matt Haig, the action-adventure pace of Joe Hill and an originality that is all his own."
