Transworld is publishing American by Day, the third novel from Derek B Miller, whose first two books were published by Faber.
Miller's debut Norwegian by Night won the Crime Writers Association John Creasey New Blood Dagger for best first novel in 2013; follow-up The Girl in Green came out last July.
American by Day is about a Norwegian policewoman who is charged by her ageing father to find her brother who has gone missing in upstate New York, following the death of one of his female academic colleagues.
Transworld publisher Bill Scott-Kerr called it "unique, compelling and ultimately redemptive" and "at once a murder mystery, a comedy of manners and a penetrating look at contemporary America".
"Ever since I read and was captivated by Norwegian by Night, I’ve been a fan of Derek B Miller’s writing," he continued. "There are few writers who can get both humour and pathos on the page with his apparently effortless skill, so I am utterly thrilled now to be publishing his new novel, American by Day, which emphatically demonstrates these qualities all over again."
Scott-Kerr acquired British and Commonwealth volume rights, including audio, from Rebecca Carter at Janklow and Nesbit. The novel will be published by Doubleday in the UK in April 2018, and simultaneously by Lauren Wein at Houghton Mifflin in the US.
