Trapeze has acquired the “masterful” Unheard: The Medical Practice of Silencing, an exploration of the health system from NHS consultant, researcher and science communicator Dr Rageshri Dhairyawan.
Editorial director Katie Packer negotiated the deal for UK and Commonwealth rights in a deal with Holly Faulks at Greene & Heaton. The book will be published in hardback, e-book and audiobook on 4th July 2024.
Trapeze said: “Dr Dhairyawan takes us on a journey through history to show how not listening to patients has been ingrained in the story of medicine.
“By amplifying the voices of patients and the most marginalised in society we will not only achieve health equity, but improve medicine for all. With true stories of neglect and injustice, Dr Dhairyawan opens the lid on the real-life, devastating impact silencing can have and offers a way forward where active and engaged listening is the new frontier.
“This is a story of the unheard, and a timely exposé of the medical world.”
Packer said: “Dr Rageshri Dhairyawan is a bright beaming light in our health service, and she deftly investigates health inequity and doctor-patient relationships in this book.
“Unheard is a fresh perspective and a masterful exploration of silencing in our health systems. I’m grateful Dr Rageshri is putting her wealth of experience and knowledge into a narrative accessible for all, I believe it has the potential to save lives.”
Dhairyawan said: ”Being heard and taken seriously should be a fundamental part of healthcare. However, through my experiences as a doctor, researcher and patient, I have seen how often this doesn’t happen, with serious consequences. Patients and minoritised voices in medicine are silenced at individual and global levels. I wrote Unheard to address this and propose a health system which values everyone equally.
"I’m so delighted to publish this with Trapeze who are already doing so much to amplify lesser heard voices.”
Born in Mumbai, Dhairyawan was brought up in Essex and is now based in London. She is a consultant in sexual health and HIV medicine with over 20 years of experience of working in the NHS as well as being a researcher and science communicator. Her research has been published widely and cited in national guidelines.
She has held national policy and charity roles and is an internationally known speaker on health equity. She is an inaugural Wellcome Collection x Spread the Word awardee 2022, where she was supported to write a proposal for Unheard.
