DK Red has snapped up How to Stay Sane in a House Share, the début book from Alice Wilkinson, deputy head of health features at the Telegraph.
Elizabeth Neep, editorial director, acquired world English-language rights from Megan Staunton at Bergstrom Studio for publication in spring 2025 as part of "DK’s growing narrative non-fiction list".
Billed as the "essential deep-dive into shared living", How to Stay Sane in a House Share details how to choose the right housemate, how to deal with conflict, alongside interviews from experts such as Professor Robin Dunbar and "millennial therapist" Dr Sara Kuburic. It will also contain "countless" case studies from real-life situations.
Wilkinson said: "In the 10 years I’ve lived in eight different house shares, I’ve observed the unique ways they expose what’s at the core of human relationships. To put my experiences on paper and interrogate the complexities of house sharing has been hugely cathartic. House shares are intimate and they are infuriating. In some, I’ve found connection and companionship, in others I’ve felt lost and stuck. I’ve made friends for life and I’ve made enemies. And throughout it all, I found myself asking—where is the advice on how to house share well? This book is my attempt to answer that question."
Neep added: "The need for [the book] felt so obvious and it perfectly captured so many of the conversations I had been having with friends who are house sharing long into their 30s. As beautifully written as it is insightful, this book is a must-read for house sharers everywhere.”
