Doubleday has acquired the rights to the new novel from Bellies author Nicola Dinan, Disappoint Me.
Senior commissioning editor Bobby Mostyn-Owen acquired UK & Commonwealth (excluding Canada) rights from Monica MacSwan at Aitken Alexander Associates. Doubleday will publish Disappoint Me in hardback, export trade paperback, e-book and audio on 23rd January 2025, backed by a marketing and publicity campaign. Katy Nishimoto at The Dial Press will publish in the US.
Milly Reid, head of publicity for Doubleday, who won the Publishers’ Publicity Circle Debut Novel of the Year Award for her work on Bellies, said: "The Skinny magazine put it best that Bellies was “a watershed moment in British publishing”. And Disappoint Me will be a landmark publication for Doubleday that seeks to engage Nicola’s existing readers and welcome new fans to the fold."
Mostyn-Owen said: "Nicola Dinan’s readers know that she is a rare observer of the human heart who makes us laugh, cry and yearn to connect. She writes about how our relationships, our families and our friendships are so often the most important thing we’ll ever do. Disappoint Me is a perfect, funny, moving and poignant book that leaves you wanting to hold your loved ones that much dearer."
Dinan said: "I feel so grateful for Doubleday’s support in publishing Disappoint Me, a novel that reckons with the pressures of living the ’right’ kind of life and making peace with the past."
Bellies (Doubleday, 2023) was listed for a Lambda Literary Award, the Polari First Book Prize, the Gordon Burn Prize, the Diverse Book Awards and the Mo Siewcharran Prize.
Element Pictures has acquired the film/TV rights.
