Duckworth Books has netted Vet at the End of the Earth: Adventures with Animals in the South Atlantic, a "captivating" memoir from former vet Jonathan Hollins.
Publisher Rowan Cope acquired volume and audio rights in British Commonwealth territories, excluding Canada, from Annabel Merullo at PFD. The book will be published in October 2023.
Recently retired from his role as a senior vet, Hollins has worked in a number of British Overseas Territories including the Falkland Islands, Tristan da Cunha, Ascension and St Helena. His work includes caring for a Seychelles giant tortoise, relocating reindeer herds and rescuing animals in "extraordinary and rugged landscapes ranging from actively volcanic to lush and tropical". It is a "warm, funny and beautifully crafted" memoir recounting Hollins’ tales of island vetting which are "steeped in local cultures, history and peoples of the islands, far removed from the hustle of modern life".
Cope said: "I am frankly thrilled to be publishing this fascinating and hugely entertaining memoir. Jonathan Hollins brings to his vetting tales the writerly sensibility and craft, wit and irresistible charm of Herriot and Durrell, combined with unique settings and fauna. You simply cannot fail to be won over by this book."
Hollins added: "Throughout, in every shape and form, are animals, my great love. Innocent and honest, they represent the best of us. My wish is to transport the reader, whether hunkered down by the fire on a frosty evening or topping up their tan in a deckchair on the Costa del Sol, into these beautiful little worlds, each one enriched by our animal companions."
