BBC Books, part of Ebury, has acquired journalist and podcaster Gabriel Gatehouse’s "revelatory" exploration of US conspiracy culture, The Coming Storm.
Publishing director Albert DePetrillo bought world rights from Toby Mundy at Aevitas Creative and Ellie Caddell at the BBC. The book will be published in hardback on 5th September 2024.
"From the creator of the hit podcast, The Coming Storm pulls at the long roots of America’s conspiracy-laden political culture to reveal a radical new type of politics emerging, in which truth and reason have been eclipsed by fantasy and narrative," the synopsis supplied by the publisher read. "From a long-forgotten coup plot against Franklin D Roosevelt, via the death of a Clinton aide in the 1990s through to Pizzagate and Hunter Biden’s laptop, these stories shine a light on a loose alliance of white supremacists, men’s rights activists, tech bros and militia leaders attempting to reshape American politics."
The book will be published alongside a new series of the podcast, launching on 11th September 2024.
"The Coming Storm is a deep dive into the parallel realities that have emerged out of the Trump era," Gatehouse said. "What began as an investigation into a crazy narrative, about a cabal of satanic paedophiles running America, turned into a journey into the dark undergrowth of contemporary political culture. This book is the result of many years spent pickling in the world of conspiracy theories."
DePetrillo added: "I’m enormously proud to be publishing Gabriel’s first book, and The Coming Storm is a masterpiece, not only bringing new levels of depth and nuance to the story told in the original podcast, but showing the significant and terrifying ways things have evolved since. It is a wild ride, and Gabriel is a superb writer, always bringing the reader along with him down each rabbit hole and back. If you want to understand just how the world has fallen under the spell of populist politics, The Coming Storm is your answer."
